Every stage in life comes with change to some degree, and retirement isn’t an exception. Not every change is bad, and being prepared can ease the stress of even unwanted changes.

Nursing homes are intended for those who don’t need to be in a hospital, but require more care than can be given at home. Moving to a nursing home sounds like a big step, but it can also give a feeling on safety and comfort.

Some nursing homes resemble hospitals, but others offer a home-like environment. Some allow couples to live together, and some allow pets. It is important to find one that fits one’s lifestyle and that will give as smooth a transition as possible.

Many nursing homes are part of continuing care communities. This means that residents can move into a villa or apartment in a resort style community, and if the need arises move on to assisted living or nursing care while staying in their community.

The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services perform inspections of nursing homes, and rate the performance in quality of medical care, nurse staffing, and health and safety. There are over 1200 nursing homes in California, and around 34 percent reach an overall five star rating.

Golden-GateOur list will show examples of nursing homes with an excellent rating. They are divided in metropolitan areas: Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Napa-Sonoma, Northern Coast, Northern Sierras, Riverside-San Bernardino, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose.

The health inspection rating consists of the last three years onsite inspections. The staffing rating consists of the number of hours of care on average given each resident each day, and considers differences in level of need of care between residents. The quality measure rating consists of nine different physical and clinical measures.

Naturally, not having a five star rating doesn’t mean that a place is bad. No rating system can take everything into account, and the choice should be based on what fits the specific person.
