The Johns Hopkins Hospital is considered one of the best hospitals in the world, and it has topped the charts as number one for nearly 20 years. Its mission is to improve the health of its community and the world by setting the standard of excellence in patient care.
The hospital was founded in 1889, and the name comes from Johns Hopkins – a Baltimore banker and merchant. He left millions of dollars to be used to create a hospital and a university. Today, the hospital is highly ranked for specialties such as rheumatology, neurology, respiratory disorders, heart surgery, kidney diseases, and much more.
Amongst the hospital’s credits are big medical breakthroughs, like discovering “restriction enzymes” which won a Nobel Prize, identifying three different types of polio virus, and discovering the brain’s natural opiates, which paved way to understanding neurotransmitter functions and pathways.
Johns Hopkins Hospital recently invested over $1 billion in patient care through new buildings in East Baltimore. The new buildings hold 560 private patient rooms, 33 new state of the art operating rooms, a children’s center, emergency department, and much more. The pediatric emergency department alone is able to see more than 40,000 patients each year.
When building the new facilities, Johns Hopkins Hospital held a strong focus on creating a healing environment with calming interior, sun-filled rooms, and peaceful public spaces. There are also whimsical animal sculptures, an art collection, and landscaped gardens.
